Scientists have discovered that the radioactive impact on surrounding oceans from the Fukushima nuclear disaster has already outstripped the 1986 Chernobyl disaster, meaning that the figure of nearly a million cancer deaths as a result of Chernobyl is set to be replicated over the coming decades.
When nuclear experts like Dr. Christopher Busby and Arnie Gundersen were warning that Fukushima could become “Chernobyl on steroids” in the early days and weeks of the disaster they were called alarmists by many sectors of the mainstream media.
However, within just two weeks of the Japanese earthquake and tsunami that crippled the nuclear plant, the amount of radiation released from the facility already rivaled that of Chernobyl, the worst nuclear disaster up until that point.
Now new research conducted by Ken Buesseler, a chemical oceanographer with the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, illustrates how Fukushima, which has already been dispensed with as a news story by the corporate media despite the crisis only escalating, has surpassed Chernobyl in its negative impact on the nearby seas and oceans
“When it comes to the oceans,”the impact of Fukushima exceeds Chernobyl,” said Buesseler.
“Levels of some radionuclides are at least an order of magnitude higher than the highest levels in 1986 in the Baltic and Black Seas, the two ocean water bodies closest to Chernobyl,” he added.
Buesseler has been awarded a rapid-response grant from the National Science Foundation’s (NSF) Division of Ocean Sciences to study the oceanic data, a vital task given the fact that theEPA responded to the crisis by raising the safe radiation limit and figuratively putting its fingers in its ears.
Despite the fact that Fukushima has devastated the environment in a myriad of different ways, in addition to the fact that the long term impact won’t be known for years, self-proclaimed environmentalists like George Monbiot have revealed themselves as wolves in sheep’s clothing by completely dismissing the importance of Fukushima amidst their zeal to hype global warming and carbon taxes.
Even as the Fukushima crisis reached its height, Monbiot wrote a series of articles in the Guardian not only downplaying the severity of the situation, but brazenly proclaiming that Fukushima had made him “stop worrying and love nuclear power.”
Monbiot slammed those concerned about Fukushima for having “wildly exaggerated the dangers of radioactive pollution,” strange talk for a supposed environmentalist but unsurprising given that Monbiot is part of an elite that is hell bent on exploiting manufactured fears about global warming to push through a “planned-opolis” prison society wherein every single human activity will be tightly regulated and licensed by the state. In Monbiot’s world view, an environmental crisis only exists when it can be plundered for power and control.
“I have to say that I know George Monbiot and he doesn’t know anything,” Dr. Christopher Busby responded, adding that Monbiot’s claims were “total nonsense,” “tosh,” and that it was “criminally irresponsible for him to write what he writes given that he doesn’t know anything.”
The news that radionuclides now released from Fukushima have already had a bigger impact on surrounding oceans than Chernobyl counts as more egg on Monbiot’s face, but the real consequences for sea life and the wider threat to human health will only become clearer as cancers accelerate in the coming years.
Despite UN and World Health Organization studies that claim Chernobyl led to a maximum of 9,000 deaths and 200,000 cases of radiation sickness, more contemporary studies have shown that nearly a million people have been killed from cancers caused by the disaster over the course of the last 25 years.
The corporate media and faux environmentalists like Monbiot will continue to poo-poo Fukushima, but when people start dropping dead from an explosion of cancers over the next 30 years, it will be yet another reminder that burying your head in the sand is not a good way to prevent nuclear contamination.
The 92 villagers were the first evacuees to be given short home visits after they were forced to flee their residences within 20 kilometers (12 miles) of the crisis-stricken nuclear plant. The evacuees brought back items such as bankbooks and photographs and exited the evacuation zone in the evening.
Nine municipalities are subject to the evacuation instruction, with about 27,800 households inside the no-entry zone. People who want to return home are given two hours at their residences to collect their belongings.
Dr. Helen Caldicott
TWENTY-FIVE years after Chernobyl, many billions of dollars are at stake if the Fukushima reactor meltdowns cause the so-called “atomic renaissance” to halt or even slow down. This is evident from the nuclear industry’s vociferous attacks on its critics.
We see this especially in Australia, where the industry is conducting a whatever-it-takes propaganda campaign to ensure that nothing stands in the way of vast profits to be made from continuing to export uranium; from the plan to establish a radioactive waste dump at Muckaty Station in the Northern Territory; and from the industry’s desire to dot the continent with reactors.
Proponents of nuclear power – including George Monbiot, who has had a mysterious road-to-Damascus conversion to its supposedly benign effects – accuse me and others of ”cherry-picking” data and overstating the health effects of radiation. Yet by reassuring the public that things aren’t too bad, Monbiot and others misrepresent and distort the scientific evidence of the harmful effects of radiation exposure.
Their first piece of disinformation is to confuse the effects of external and internal radiation. The former is what populations were exposed to when atomic bombs were detonated over Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945.
Internal radiation, by contrast, emanates from radioactive elements that enter the body by inhalation, ingestion, or skin absorption. Hazardous radioactive elements being released in the sea and air around Fukushima accumulate at each step of various food chains (for example, into algae, crustaceans, small fish, bigger fish, then humans; or soil, grass, cow’s meat and milk, then humans). Entering the body, these elements – called internal emitters – migrate to specific organs such as the thyroid, liver, bone, and brain, continuously irradiating small volumes of cells with high doses of alpha, beta and/or gamma radiation, and over many years often induce cancer.
Further, many remain radioactive in the environment for long periods, posing danger for future generations.
The grave effects of internal emitters are of the most profound concern at Fukushima – as indeed they continue to be at Chernobyl. It is erroneous and misleading to use the term ”acceptable levels of external radiation” in assessing internal radiation doses. To do so is to propagate inaccuracies and to mislead the public worldwide and journalists who are seeking the truth about radiation’s hazards.
Further, nuclear industry proponents assert that low doses of radiation produce no ill effects and are therefore safe. But, as a US National Academy of Sciences report concluded in 2007, no dose of radiation is safe, however small, including background radiation; exposure is cumulative, so that each dose (whether, for example, from a medical x-ray or from passing through the whole-body scanners soon to be introduced in Australian airports) adds to an individual’s risk of developing cancer during his or her lifetime.
Regarding Chernobyl, various seemingly reputable groups have issued differing reports on the morbidity and mortalities resulting from the 1986 radiation catastrophe. The World Health Organisation in 2005 attributed only 43 human deaths directly to the disaster and estimated an additional 4000 fatal cancers. In contrast, a 2009 report published by the New York Academy of Sciences comes to a very different conclusion. Its scientist authors estimated the number of deaths attributable to the Chernobyl meltdown at about 980,000.
Monbiot wrongly dismisses the report out of hand as worthless, but to ignore and denigrate an entire body of literature is arrogant and irresponsible.
Finally, there is widespread confusion about the roles of the World Health Organisation and the International Atomic Energy Commission. Monbiot expresses surprise that a UN-affiliated body such as WHO might be under the influence of the nuclear power industry, causing its reporting on nuclear power matters to be biased. And yet that is precisely the case.
In the early days of nuclear power, WHO issued forthright statements on radiation risks, such as its 1956 warning: ”Genetic heritage is the most precious property for human beings. It determines the lives of our progeny, health and harmonious development of future generations. As experts, we affirm that the health of future generations is threatened by increasing development of the atomic industry and sources of radiation.”
After 1959, the organisation made no more statements on health and radioactivity.
On May 28, 1959, at the 12th World Health Assembly, WHO drew up an agreement with the International Atomic Energy Agency. A clause of this agreement says the WHO effectively grants the right of prior approval over any research it might undertake or report on to the IAEA – a group that many people, including journalists, think is a neutral watchdog, but which is, in fact, an advocate for the nuclear power industry. Its founding papers state: ”The agency shall seek to accelerate and enlarge the contribution of atomic energy to peace, health and prosperity through the world.”
The WHO’s subjugation to the IAEA is widely known within the scientific radiation community, something which Monbiot chose to ignore. But it is clearly not the only matter on which he is ignorant, after his recent apparent three-day perusal of the vast body of scientific information on radiation and radioactivity. The confusion that he and other nuclear industry apologists sow about radiation risks is very similar to the way that the tobacco industry propounded misinformation and lies about the true effects of smoking.
Despite their claims, it is they, not the ”anti-nuclear movement”, who are ”misleading the world about the impacts of radiation on human health”.

Mark Sircus, Contributing Writer
“Radiation is continuing to leak out of the reactors, the situation is not stable at all, radiation continues to leak,” says Dr. Michio Kaku, professor of theoretical physics at the City University of New York and top graduate of Harvard. “We are looking at a ticking timebomb. It appears stable but the slightest disturbance, a secondary earthquake, a pipe break, evacuation of the crew at Fukishima could set off a full scale melt down at three nuclear power stations–far beyond what we saw at Chernobyl.”
Aftershocks rattling Japan after the nation’s record quake on March 11 may continue for at least six months, increasing the risk of damage to a crippled nuclear plant at the center of the worst nuclear crisis since Chernobyl. “Aftershocks as big as magnitude-7 are likely to continue hitting in eastern and northern Japan for at least six months,” said Teruyuki Kato, a professor at the University of Tokyo’s Earthquake Research Institute.
This is the main scientist to listen to and it’s worthwhile to watch his most recent statements on the video. Radioactive contamination from the Fukushima power plant has been carried around the world and far out to sea and if current estimates and the situation do not worsen we already will have 10 percent of Chernobyl’s radiation spreading around the globe and it looks like each and every month we will see another 10 percent of another Chernobyl’s worth of radiation released to contaminate the world further. Dr. Kaku says his family is already leaving Tokyo because they don’t believe the statements of the Japanese utility because they have consistently low-balled the dangers, as has everyone else.
Dr. Chris Busby, another physicist says there is a rage in the people in Tokyo and he now predicts based on his calculations that 800,000 people out of about 8 million who live within 200 kilomters of the plant will contract cancer if they are not moved out. Dr. Kaku still advises entombment in a giant slab of concrete, with 5000 tons of cement, sand and boric acid but if that ever happens it will be months away and take a huge effort that would take many more months.
Dr. Kaku says that the, “Tepco utility people are outclassed and overwhelmed and should be removed from their positions. They are “making it up as they go along,” he says of the efforts of engineers to get this disaster under some control” He too says, “We would see increases in leukemias and thyroid cancers from the massive amounts of radioactive iodine being released.”
The operator of Japan’s tsunami-flooded nuclear power complex was seeking ways Thursday to pull damaged spent fuel rods out of a storage pool at one of its reactors, citing surging radiation and elevated temperatures as worrisome signs. These two physicists are the men to monitor if you want a real assesment of the level seven nuclear disaster. With each passing week the words “safe”, “low levels”, “not harmful” will all lose their meaning as the more massive amounts of radiation are released. Six months from now it will be a different world with several open fission processes happening in multiple reactors.
“This accident has already released something on the order of 50,000 trillion becquerels of radiation. You do the math. That puts it right smack in the middle of a level 7 nuclear accident,” said Kaku.
NISA and Japan’s Nuclear Safety Commission (NSC) estimate that 370,000 – 630,000 terabecquerels of radioactive materials have been released from Units 1, 2 and 3. One terabecquerel equals one trillion becquerels.
Br. Busby, who is Scientific Secretary of the European Committee on Radiation Risk, calculated two weeks ago radiation levels two weeks ago. “Since the official International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) figures for the Fukushima contamination are from 200 to 900kBq.sq meter out to 78km from the site, we can expect between 22% and 90% increases in cancer in people living in these places in the next 10 years. The UN definition of radioactively contaminated land is 37kBq/sq metre. Since the IAEA data show that these levels of contamination, from 200,000 to 900,000 disintegrations per second per square meter, exist up to 78km from Fukushima, we can already calculate that the contamination is actually worse than Chernobyl, not 1% of Chernobyl. For the area defined by a 78km radius is 19113 sq km compared to the Chernobyl exclusion zone of 2827 sq km. About seven times greater.”
In the next month we will see a repeat or perhaps an intensification of the radiation being put out into the environment—as the melting nuclear materials continue to break through barriers. Radiation emitted will continue for an indeterminate period – at least months, maybe years—many many years.
Raw fission in the open environment is a possibility that humanity is going to have to learn how to live with. If the worst case happens—as is happening—then it will be open hunting season on everyone in the nuclear power industry as well as on politicians who have allowed them to be swayed, pressured or bribed to swear to the safety of nuclear insanity. This could be the fire pit of hell brought to earth that will finally expose the toxic monsters of the modern world for who and what they are. Making money as they have done and continue to do through the massive use of poisonous substances, nuclear or chemical, they have compromised their souls and their right to exist among more sensitive compassionate beings.
There is nothing more urgent in the field of medicine then us getting a handle on the best ways to eliminate heavy metals, radiation contamination and other toxic poisons from the body. The most obvious way of course is to reduce exposure. Sometimes to avoid toxic exposure we have to move out of a moldy house, out of a city heavily laden with air pollution or even out of a country if one plans on living a long and healthy life. If humans keep up with their intense poisoning of this planet it might mean going off the planet or burrowing deep into the ground.
Avoiding exposure is not always possible when it
comes to nuclear radiation, mercury and microwaves.
The Japanese government is making a fatal mistake leaving millions of citizens too close to the exposure of the badly leaking atomic plant. Their direction to just stay indoors is not an effective and certainly not a permanent way to avoid exposure. It is understandable why they would resist removing millions from their homes but in this case it is the only way to avoid exposure and resultant radiation sickness.
How secure should we feel about the evolving situation? Dr. Kaku couldn’t make it any more frank when he said, “Fukushima is about as stable as “hanging by your fingernails off a cliff, and they’re beginning to break one by one.”
Radioactive Iodine -131
China’s Ministry of Health said today April 13, that radioactive isotope iodine-131 had been detected in various kinds of vegetables in 12 provincial regions. The radioactive isotope was found in spinach, asparagus, lettuce, cabbage, Chinese cabbage and other vegetables in Beijing, Tianjin, Hebei, Shanghai, Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Shandong, Henan, Hunan, Guangdong, Guangxi and Hainan, according to a statement from the ministry.
The risks associated with iodine-131 contamination in Europe are no longer “negligible,”according to CRIIRAD, a French research body on radioactivity. The NGO is advising pregnant women and infants against “risky behavior,” such as consuming fresh milk or vegetables with large leaves. In response to thousands of inquiries from citizens concerned about fallout from the Fukushima nuclear disaster in Europe, CRIIRAD has compiled an information package on the risks of radioactive iodine-131 contamination in Europe.
After the radioactive cloud emanating from Japan’s stricken Fukushima nuclear power plant reached Europe in late March, CRIIRAD, a French research body on radioactivity, an NGO, said it had detected radioactive iodine-131 in rainwater in south-eastern France. In parallel testing, the French Institute for Radiological Protection and Nuclear Safety (IRSN), the national public institution monitoring nuclear and radiological risks, found iodine 131 in milk. In normal times, no trace of iodine-131 should be detectable in rainwater or milk. Radiation monitors in Canada, in Ontario, New Brunswick and British Columbia have also detected radioactive iodine.
In the United States EPA data show rising levels of Iodine-131, Cesium-134, and Cesium-137 up to 300% of maximum limits. Hawaii milk samples showed radiation 800% above normal for Cesium-134, 633% for Cesium-137, and 600% for Iodine-131. Water contamination measured over 20 times acceptable levels. Mainland amounts are also rising, including in air, soil, grass, milk, spinach, strawberries, and other foods.
Milk is especially important as it suggests the health of the entire food supply because cows eat grass. When grass is contaminated, so is everything grown in the same soil.
At least 14 US cities reported unsafe radiation amounts in drinking water. However, EPA is only testing for Iodine-131, not Cesium, Uranium or Plutonium, all emitted from Fukushima. Several radiation monitoring stations throughout Spain have recorded increases in the concentration of iodine and cesium in the air coming from Japan. Same goes for France.
One does not want to wait for the medical authorities on the iodine issue. One has to act quickly to protect their thyroid and the thyroids especially of children. A major cloud of radioactive Iodine 131 has recently passed over South Korea and is now passing just about everywhere else in the northern hemisphere.
Medical and health authorities, it seems, want all pregnant women, babies and children to be unduly exposed to radioactive iodine just because of their phobia and medical conditioning against nutritional iodine supplementation. The entire contemporary medical establishment is abandoning its fundamental mission and pledge to protect the public and their patients against harm when medically possible.
We have lots of information from Russia about the use of iodine to protect the thyroid. In Poland the use of iodine dosages was found to highly protect children’s thyroids from cancer. The risk for cancer of the thyroid is much greater in children requiring much lower exposure to I-131 than it does for adults. Same goes for pregnant women or lactating women.
It is a good time to remember Dr. Jeff Patterson’s words, former president of Physicians for Social Responsibility. “There is no safe level of radionuclide exposure, whether from food, water or other sources. Period! Exposure to radionuclides, such as Iodine-131 and Cesium-137, increases the risk of cancer. For this reason, every effort must be taken to minimize the radionuclide content in food and water.”
Personal Note: In the next 48 hours I will submit to my staff a 2nd edition of my iodine book, which will be strongly oriented to the entire issue of iodine as an essential nutrient to protect from radioactive iodine contamination of the thyroid and other glands that have a large uptake of iodine under normal conditions. The situation is guaranteed to get worse so do not wait for the medical authorities on the iodine issue. For parents waiting means vastly increasing the chance of watching your children die of thyroid cancer! Do I need to say that any stronger?
It is not a good time to be caught like deer in the headlights nor have our heads stuck in the sand about iodine or anything else that affects our survival. The essential action is to get iodine into our bodies and it does not have to be “potassium iodide.” It can also be in the form of Nascent Iodine, which is a 2% formulation based on and old Edgar Casey type that breaks molecular iodine into its I¹ atomic structure. It is the iodine I personally use for myself and my children and is ideal for iodine sensitive people with pre-existing thyroid conditions meaning it is the easiest iodine to administer, though not the cheapest to use.
There are other forms in both tablet and liquid, even the ones that can be used topically are effective in reducing people’s vulnerability to radioactive iodine. (Do NOT drink topical antiseptic iodine products such as Betadine — these products are not suitable for human consumption. They are povidone-iodine mixtures.)
I have to be honest and tell you it’s a great time to be living in the southern hemisphere. The radiation levels down here will be much delayed and much reduced and the deep valley where my Sanctuary is being finished feels very protective because it is ringed with mountains.
I just spent the first few nights at my Sanctuary center deep in the interior of Brazil and the construction men are still running all over the place. I can’t wait to open Sanctuary to the world but am not so sure there will be much of a world on its feet in just a few months’ time as the financial world careens out of control. I listened to an excellent video last night that predicts that when the next earnings reports of major corporations come out in July it will be curtains for the stock markets as the nuclear disaster is taking the real economy, and thus earnings, down like a rock.
It was such a pleasure to feel the magic of being surrounded by Nature, hearing the rivers flowing around Sanctuary. No Internet, so great to be away from all the bad news and able to concentrate on finishing my manuscript for the Radiation Toxicity Syndrome book. It is an overwhelming challenge that is taking me, according to my assistant Claudia, too much time so I will come out first with the iodine book focused on the radioactive issue.
I think it’s a great time to take a vacation from the north or at least get the women and children out of harm’s way. It’s simply not a good time to be gambling with the safety of our loved ones—with the possibility of a greater explosion at the Japanese nuclear power station with a resultant massive release of radiation that travels far and wide across our planet. Men and professionals particularly have to sometimes stand their ground and even sacrifice their lives like the men are doing at the nuclear plant but we don’t have to risk our children.
Many of the men in the Titanic had to encourage their women and children to get on the lifeboats without them. But in this case, if a miracle happens and there is no worse-than-imaginable-case scenario, and all-clear sirens sound, then families can be reunited. The next few weeks or months will tell us a whole lot about our futures.

(NaturalNews) The title of this article probably should have been “TOLD YA SO.” After all the downplaying, all the denials, all the disinfo and deceptions by both the nuclear industry and the mainstream media, it finally emerges that the amount of radiation released by Fukushima was far, far higher than what we were told. How high? So high that the Fukushima catastrophe has now been raised from a level 5 event to a level 7 event on the International Nuclear and Radiological Event Scale (http://www-ns.iaea.org/tech-areas/e…). They just skipped right over level 6 because they know even a 6 would be laughable at this point.
A level 5 event is an “accident with wider consequences.” A level 6 event is a “serious accident,” and a level 7 event is a “major accident.” If you really do the math, however, Fukushima should be alevel 28 eventbecause there are four reactors each at level seven (4×7 = 28). Chernobyl only had one reactor, and it stored far less fuel than any one of the Fukushima reactors.
The amount of releasedradiationrequired to quality for a level 7 event is “several tens of thousands of terabecquerels.” For example, 50,000 terabecquerels.
How much radiation has already been released from Fukushima? 500,000 terabecquerels– and that’s just from iodine-131 and doesn’t even count the other isotopes that are also being released (http://apnews.myway.com/article/201…). In other words — and here’s the real shocker – the amount of radiation released from Fukushima is over TEN TIMES the amount needed to qualify for a level 7 event!
With the arrival of this new designation, Fukushima is now OFFICIALLY a Chernobyl-class event, and nuclear officials are now openly and publicly admitting that the total radiation release from Fukushima could soon exceed Chernobyl – although they’re desperately trying to claim it somehow won’t, if only due to the power of their own imaginations.
Meanwhile, we’re being treated to an ever-expanding lesson in the table of elements as yet more radioactive materials are being detected in the Fukushima releases. Today, strontium was found in the soils near Fukushima, adding to the impressive list of other elements that were blown into the environment by the explosions there: Plutonium, Iodine and Cesium. (BBC)
If only Fukushima had blown gold out of its core, Japan might actually have a way to pay for all this, by the way. But sadly, the byproducts of nuclear fission are not the precious metals we would all wish for. Rather, they are the radioactive elements determined by the laws of physics — the very same laws of physics that the nuclear industry once thought it had smugly conquered.
Murphy, that clever little bastard, seems to crop up everywhere these days.
Far worse than we were originally told
With this new designation of a level 7 event, the massive cover-up has melted down. Although Japan has tried desperately to withhold radiation data, shut off the gauges, explain away the extremely high sensor readings and assure everybody that it was only a “miniscule” amount of radiation being released into the environment, the sad but undeniable truth of the matter is that Fukushima is a global-scale nuclear disasterthat’s now unleashing radiation across the world that’s showing up in our milk and food.
The excuse behind raising the event to level 7 right now instead of earlier is laughable but predictable: Authorities claim they just didn’t know how to measure the radiation!
“Our preparations for how to measure (the radiation leakage) when such a tsunami and earthquake occurred were insufficient and, as a result, we were late in disseminating information internationally,” said a senior official working for Prime Minister Naoto Kan. (http://www.cnbc.com/id/42542704)
In other words, the nuclear industry didn’t know how to measure radiation, they claim, and even when they did figure out how to take measurements, they withheld the resulting data.
The clever disinfo campaign marches on. NISA is now saying that the radiation released into the atmosphere is only 10 percent of Chernobyl’s release. But what they don’t readily admit is that they’re releasing massive quantities of radioactive water into the ocean, and that doesn’t count as “atmosphere,” you see.
They also don’t want you to remember that Fukushima is engage in an ongoing release of radiation with absolutely no end in sight. It is only a matter of weeks, in other words, before Fukushima does exceed the total Chernobyl release levels.
How do we know that? For one, that same senior official quoted above also says the Japanese government is now telling TEPCO to “set target dates for when it would halt the radiation leakage as well as restore the cooling systems” (http://www.cnbc.com/id/42542704).
Set target dates? It’s like being stuck in a bureaucratic nightmare. Let’s all have a committee conference, and we’ll put together an “actionable game plan” so that we can “accentuate our positive accomplishments” while we all “facilitate going forward with team players” and other such nonsense corporate speak that often flows from the mouths of business suit morons who have no idea what to do but somehow want to take credit for it.
If there’s a target date to set for halting the radiation, it should be TODAY. If there’s a target date to restore cooling to the spent fuel rods, it should be YESTERDAY. Does anyone really believe these are things to be slapped onto a calendar like your best friend’s birthday?
Oh, and by the way, we’re now supposed to believe the Japanese government is telling us the truth from here forward, I suppose. Sure, they lied about the radiation releases in the past. They downplayed the seriousness of the event; they withheld data and explained away the broken gauges as flukes. But now they’re suddenly going to be up front with all of us and tell us the truth, you see. Now we’re going to get honest and accurate information out of Japan, if you can believe that.
Still, nuclear industry shills can’t help themselves from continuing to downplay the situation. “Judging from all the measurement data, it is quite under control,” says Hironobu Unesaki, a nuclear physicist at Kyoto University Research Reactor Institute (http://apnews.myway.com/article/201…). He also said that raising Fukushima to a level 7 event was no cause for worry, and that “…it doesn’t mean that a significant amount of release is now continuing.”
It seems that Unesaki didn’t receive the memo that says, “Stop lying to the public.” He’s still operating from the previous official memo which instructed everyone to, “Deny and Downplay.”
Remember when Fukushima was only a level 4 event and all the nuclear industry experts and government experts were saying “this is nothing like Chernobyl?” Then it was raised to a level 5 event and they repeated, “It’s still nothing like Chernobyl.” And now with the official designation at level 7, they’re screaming, “We swear! It’s nothing like Chernobyl!”
Except that it is. It’s a lot like Chernobyl. All the elements are the same, after all: The toxic iodine-131 and cesium-137 being released into the environment. The strange but persistent government cover-ups. The lying to the public. The downplaying of the human fatalities caused by the event. The outrageous ineptitude of the nuclear industry “experts” who told us these power plants were safe.
It sound almost exactly like Chernobyl, come to think of it. And if you read the news archives from 1986, you’ll find extremely harsh words from the USA condemning the Ukranian officials for withholding data and downplaying the situation there. And yet, just 25 years later, the tables are turned. Now Japan and the USA are in full-on cover-up mode, playing the part of the Soviet officials who lied to their own people about the severity of the disaster.
If there’s one thing we’ve all learned from history, it’s that you can always count on your government to lie to you in times of trouble. At precisely the moment the People need honest, accurate information about the severity of a disaster or crisis, government leaders will take to the podium and calmly announce that everything is fine and people should take no precautions whatsoever. And then immediately after these speeches are given, they scurry off to their underground command bunkers.
Here’s a video of Obama telling Americans there’s no problem with the radioactive fallout from Fukushima. It’s hilarious (in a sad sort of way): http://naturalnews.tv/v.asp?v=61EFA…
Here is a mystery: where is all the radiation coming from at Fukushima?
Since the site is too radioactive to make definitive analyses, physicists and engineers are making educated guesses, and the results are not optimistic.
First, radiation continues to spread, even as the utility claimed that everything was under control. Radiation at unit 2 was recorded at 100,000 normal, so a worker spending 1 hour there would start to come down with radiation sickness. Also, radiation in the sea water 1,000 feet from the site up to a mile from the site have registered thousands of time normal reading.
Now plutonium has been found in trace amounts. The situation gets worse every day. But is the reactor situation is stable, as the utility claims, then were is radiation coming from?
Second, the radiation has both iodine and cesium. Since iodine only has a half life of 8 days, this casts doubt on the spent fuel rods, since iodine has had plenty of time to decay in those spent fuel ponds. Another possibility is a pipe leak. But most likely, it is a breach of containment. This is because radioactive iodine and cesium come from exposed fuel rods that have melted.
Recently, the GE engineer who worked on the Mark I reactor has stated that the source is mostly a core meltdown in unit 2 that has eaten its right through the pressure vessel (which surrounds the super hot core.) This echoes what I have been saying. If he is right, then “corium” (a liquid mixture of melted uranium) has melted its way right through the reactor vessel and is now leaking into the water system below the reactor. So direct contact with melted uranium may be the most likely cause.
Most likely, this means more radiation into the environment, since there is no way stop radioactive water from touching the corium. However, at worst, the molten fuel could plunge into a pool of water and explode, creating the nightmare of Chernobyl.
A couple of years ago, after playing an outstanding PC video game called S.T.A.L.K.E.R. – Shadow of Chernobyl from a little known developer in Russia called GSC Game World I became sort of obsessed with the idea of going there, and seeing that place. In the game, you are a “STALKER”, or a guide of sorts, a hunter of sorts, a survivalist and traveller through the strange and radiation soaked landscape of the Exclusion Zone. Through powerful Zone emissions, deep pockets of intense radiation, and the ever present, and deadly anomalies, you search through the rubble and ruin of the Zone’s landscape, searching for anything of value as you trudge through the dreary Zone, seeking a man named Strelok. The Zone is intricate in its detail, simulating the lost city of Pripyat perfectly, and the feeling of lonesome desolation is very romantic, and rich in its beauty.
The developers continued on to make more S.T.A.L.K.E.R. games, and with each one, my interest in going to see this place grew. The strange, and dangerous Zone, with its intense radiation emanating from ruined army vehicles, oppressively terrifying underground laboratories filled to capacity with horrifyingly warped and twisted creatures who might have once been human, more zombified Russian soldiers than you can handle with your broken weapons and paltry supplies.
The game, especially with the Oblivion Lost mod on it, is one of the top games in my recent memory, and it got me to really thinking about the accident that occurred when I was just a young boy in a new light. I did a little bit of research online and discovered that you can actually go into the Zone now, through official channels, and with closely supervised guided tours. You can actually get right up to the plant, and look upon the Sarcophagus with your own eyes, and do so with little danger. You can go and visit the lost city of Pripyat, and as long as you stay off the earthen ground, you will not absorb that much radiation, and can probably go home and have a couple normal children.
But this all got me to thinking about the reason this is possible now, 25 years on. The Soviet government, at the time, was extremely evasive of questions and inquiries and they were not telling the people what was really happening. The Kremlin told the people in the affected area of contamination exactly the same thing about the yellow rain that today’s Japanese government is telling their citizens, that the yellow rain coming down after the accident was simply pollen. Children played it, not realizing, for lack of information, that this yellow rain contained extremely hazardous radioactive fallout from the exploded reactor. It was a horrible tragedy, and it could have been a LOT worse, had it not been for the heroic and self-sacrificing nature of the people who stayed behind to bury Chernobyl in boron and cement, sealing it off (temporarily) from the harmful radioactive fission particles swirling around Europe. Those people died quickly afterwards, and not a single one is left today. They knew that the radiation was deadly, but they also understood that they had to act quickly to avoid a very serious, and possible Extinction Level Event from happening. The brave souls that stepped into the breach of Chernobyl, and sealed it off immediately saved humanity from the cost of a very serious problem which could have altered our way of life on this world forever, and likely already has to some degree.
Chernobyl’s reactor is still producing fission, still going through the meltdown process and will continue to do so for a very very long time. The sarcophagus is ever in need of repair, and ever in need of brave souls who will tend to that need, lest the beast begin spewing its toxic clouds again. Chernobyl is not “over”, and it won’t be “over” in that sense for a couple thousand years yet.
What is happening in Japan at this point, with these people, the “Fukushima 50″ being sacrificed to keep a doomed reactor going, is appalling. The fight to save these reactors is a fight to save face in front of the world on the part of the Japanese. Millions of lives are at risk, and instead of burying the reactors immediately, and using the lives of the brave souls who have chosen to stay behind not to save a reactor who’s levels are 10 millions times normal levels and rising, but to BURY them, and seal them off. This adds another very LONG term responsibility to humanity, but lets face the situation at hand. If we continue to allow Fukushima to burn, and to spew radiation, we as a species have not got long on this earth. We NEED to bury these reactors as a united human race. Japan, step aside, and let humanity save itself. Bury those reactors immediately. Cease your operations to save the doomed plant, and bury it immediately, before all is lost, before all of humanity is tainted with cancerous radiation.
I’m sick to death of hearing every day about these pitiful efforts to save this doomed, and potentially world-ending technology at Fukushima. There should be no debate about this anymore. Why are we attempting to save it after reactor 3 blew sky high two weeks ago! This is unacceptable. I’m tired of the talking heads trying to reassure us that radiation levels are normal, and that there is nothing to worry about. I’m in complete disbelief that our own President told us to shut up, and not prepare, and to listen to them for all the information we need, when they clearly DO NOT intend to tell us the reality.
People claim that somehow the monitoring stations on the internet are showing normal levels, without any thought to the fact that the worldwide water shipping lanes are monitored and tracked and you can track EVERY ship in the world, pretty much, unless they head into the Suez Canal and the Gulf of Aden region (one of the busiest shipping lanes in the world!). Your information is being manipulated and controlled. Everywhere you look, “don’t panic” is the statement of the day. Don’t take potassium iodide. In fact, don’t even buy it. You have nothing to fear.
The insert on the potassium iodide that somehow I managed to secure from the empty shelves actually says “Don’t take unless a government official tells you to do so”. Really? I’m going to trust the people with the worst possible track record for telling the truth?
I recently was flipping through the television and came across an old Transformers episode, like I used to come home to every day after school at 3:30pm. In it, the leader of the Decepticons, Megatron, is attempting to persuade a human political official that the Autobots are evil. After announcing himself as Megatron, leader of the Decepticons, he explains to the official that it is in fact the Autobots who are trying to deceive humanity! (The Decepticons then disguise themselves as the good guys, the Autobots and begin committing crimes, getting themselves caught on tape, for which the real Autobots eventually get framed for, lose in the court of public opinion, and eventually get tried and convicted by humanity, and and exiled off world)
But it’s as if this is how life is. After being told by someone to our face that they are lying to us, we still can’t help but believe they are telling us the absolute truth and cannot even recognize deception when it’s plain as day in front of us.
Wake up time. If Fukushima Daiichi is not buried immediately, Starting Today, we are facing an ELE (Extinction Level Event) and without immediate action, we are facing long time health risks over a wider area that ever imagined possible in all of the pandemic wargaming that the elite have been playing with us all for the past couple of years.
What we have here is a failure to understand the basics. Nuclear fission is happening, neutron beams have been observed coming out of the reactor, which absolutely means that nuclear fission is occurring and that there is a containment breach. Today’s news that there is 10 million times the normal radiation levels being detected is evidence that we’ve waited too long as a people for the greedy corporations (Tokyo Power and GE) to attempt to save their technology at the health risk of us all, and IF we can get through the lies, the rhetoric, the panic and fear, and simply ACT NOW to seal this thing away forever, perhaps there’ll still be a Tokyo around for my grandchildren to see someday.

Update: we are truly amazed that presenting what is a pure fact without any spin associated to it, can generate such an outbreak of insecurity and outright fear-driven responses. We had always expected that readers here can receive and interpret facts as presented, instead of demanding filtering for what some deem is unpleasant information. We urge that sub-segment to immediately and permanently orient their attention to other media outlets that does the prefiltering for them, as per the government’s mandate of not spreading panic.
Radioactive Xenon 133 (5.243 day half life) has now reached the entire Eastern seaboard, and soon will likely cover the entire world.
Additionally, below is a projection of radioactive Iodine over Japan…
And radioactive Cesium over the Pacific
